Row Trolling

Want to buy a Row Troller?

Row Troller:
Heckel’s Marina and Tom Gelb have introduced a much needed fiberglass Row Troller onto the market.

At 14’ long and sporting a 44” beam and deep keel, the boat will easily accommodate two rowers/fishermen. Yet, weighing in at only 120 pounds, the single rower will find it light, stable, and very maneuverable.

The hull shape was molded from a Kuehl boat, incorporating a re-designed transom.
It is rated for a 3 hpr. motor and is available in gray and dark green. The package (boat, trailer, and one set of oars) is priced at $3,999.00. Interested parties should contact their rep. (Me!)  Patricia Strutz, at:
info@ablondandherboat.com   (715) 891.1173

** If you are stopping by Heckel’s, be sure to mention that I referred you. If you end up purchasing a row troller, please let me know. I keep a list and one lucky customer a year receives a guided trip!

The Bob Ellis Classic: An Informal Row Trolling Tournament

Dave Schnell shows us how it's done.

Rowing Pioneer Bob Ellis

                    Fourth Annual “Bob Ellis Classic

When: Saturday, Oct. 6th, 2007    (Sunday, the 7th ,would be the “rain day” in case we have severe weather predicted that day…such as a thunderstorm or heavy wind (steady 25 mph+) . Snow will not keep us off the lake!)

Where: Meet at Skyview Lodge in Presque Isle, Wisconsin at 8:00 a.m. for coffee and “rules” meeting. *There aren’t too many “rules.” This is an honor system, no $$ involved. Total catch and release, artificial lures only.

Where you Fish: When you arrive at the Skyview, you will sign up for your choice of lakes. It’s first come, first to sign up so be on time. Each lake will be limited to a certain number of boats. Among the entries this year are Crab Lake, Presque Isle Lake, Papoose Lake, and one or two more to be assigned (depending upon number of entries.)

Hours of tournament:  9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. After fishing, we will meet back up at Skyview Lodge in Presque Isle for cocktails, dinner, and to exaggerate about the day’s events. (You pay for your own libations & food) Dinner is at 5:30 p.m.

Entry fee: None!

Winners take:  None!

***This is just a fun event-no money involved.  We all enjoy just checking out each other’s boats, techniques, and sharing in our mutual passion!

**I could use a first and second prize this year (past recipients have won plaques and photographs of Bob Ellis.) Anyone have a prize they’d like to share? Perhaps an old oar for all of us to sign or a vintage crankbait? I welcome any prizes!

Please invite any other row trollers you may know. All I ask is that you RSVP so I get a general headcount for the tournament. Email me: info@ablondandherboat.com

You will also need to contact Adam Johnson (owner of Skyview) to make reservations for dinner. Skyview’s # (715) 686.2928.  He can also help with lodging needs.

Hope to see you there. If you have any questions, please email me:  info@ablondandherboat.com   or call (715) 477.2603

 Directions:

To Crab Lake landing from Presque Isle: Head south out of Presque Isle on Hwy "B" for 1/4 mile till Crab Lake road, turn right. Go about 2 miles to "Town dock road", turn left. Take "Town dock" to the end, that's Crab Lake landing, about 1 mile.

To get to Skyview: take directions back to Presque Isle, turn left on Hwy "W" and go one mile, Skyview is on the right, you can't miss it.

Top Ten Reasons to Row Troll for Muskies

1. Motor trolling is illegal in certain areas (such as our neck of the woods in Northern Wisconsin)

2. Row trolling can be more efficient than motor trolling because there is no noise or water disruption from the motor. This is especially helpful in gin clear water.

3. Small row boats can gain access to many lakes where motors are not allowed. Oftentimes, these lakes have had little fishing pressure resulting in a plentitude of "lure dumb" fish.

4. Row trolling is more constructive than drifting because the speed and direction of the boat can be controlled. This is extremely important when fish are finicky.

5. It is environment friendly. There is no gas or oil to affect the aquatic bug or weedlife. There is also no noise pollution.

6. Peace, solitude, and serenity are offered to anglers seeking respite from the buzz of city life.

7. Row trolling can produce when a slower presentation is required. In frigid water the fish's metabolism slows down and they tend to be lethargic. They may respond to a 1 mph row trolled bait much better than a series of quicker casted retrieves.

8. Rowing is a wonderful sport all on it's own. Catching a fish is just the icing on the cake! It provides fantastic exercise and when coupled with trolling if offers the satisfaction of working toward a goal. In this respect it is much more interactive-both physically and mentally, than motor trolling.

9. It is an efficient way to access suspended muskies. When the waterskiers and waverunners take over the periphery of the lake, row trolling the deep water in the center offers a unique fishing opportunity.

10. It is a great way to keep warm when chasing lunkers on a blustery November afternoon!

High of 16 degrees with blustery, Northwest winds. This day forced many area guides and
their clients to cancel their outings but while row trolling we were kept snug as a bug!
